When dealing with a commercial loss, it is important to remediate the problem immediately. Your business might be in jeopardy if you do not take immediate action when dealing with large commercial loses. Commercial buildings, like any building, tend to occur damages overtime; things start to wear away, like caulking near the joints of windows and doors. Cracks in the siding become large and now you are dealing with water intrusion. Depending on where you are at in the United States, damages can come from storm, hurricanes, hail , heavy rain and often flooding being the biggest concern. According to the National Geographic,  floods cost homeowners and business owners nearly 6 Billion in loses annually. Below are a few tips to help prevent flood damages to your commercial property. 

  1. Inspect your basement frequently in the event of a storm. Basements are the lowest point, which in turn is the most likely place you will see flood damages. Re-caulk all seams along windows, doors, baseboards where the foundation meets the soleplate . Install a Commercial grade sump pump in the lowest area of your basement, with the discharge pipe ran out of the commercial property. 
  2. Improve your landscape and design a system to utilize the foliage and run offs to your advantage. Install French drains where necessary to properly direct the flow of the excess rain . It is extremely important to divert all water away from your foundation. 
  3. Assess your property frequently, walk around and take notes on the damages you see. If you see discoloration near or on light fixtures, then typically that means the O-ring has failed and needs to be replaced. Check for any soft spots in your walls , as that would indicate there is a buildup of moisture or gray water has damaged the wall significantly . Be proactive ; do not wait for the storm to come and cause damages, it is better to find your vulnerabilities before the storm hits.
