Water and Fire Damage

4/7/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage carries the same problems as fire and it is just as destructive as fire damage. Water and fire damage share one thing in common; it is a problem no one wants and it is usually during the most inconvenient times. Water damage is a destructive process that can cause mold growth, swelling of wood and even in some instances degrade the structural integrity. Determining loss can be tricky as sometimes tile, baseboards, and subfloors might not exhibit any damages.

However, with the help of equipment such as probes and moisture meters, it allows for SERVPRO of Napa County to determine the extent of the damages. Water Damage Cleanup in a Home

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

When a water emergency occurs in your home or business, it’s only natural to want to take action immediately. Below are some preliminary steps you can take before we arrive, but only attempt what you can do safely.

  1. Shut off the water source, if possible. If you’re not sure where the water is coming from, we’ll inspect and handle the situation as soon as we arrive. If you don’t know how to shut off the water, contact a plumber to help.
  2. Remove excess water by mopping, blotting, or wiping. This could include flooring and hard surface furniture which has standing water on it. Do not use your household vacuum to remove water, since it could cause damage to the vacuum or be unsafe.
  3. Protect carpet, rugs, drapes, and upholstered items from further damage. Place aluminum foil or parchment paper between furniture and wet carpet or rugs. Remove books, magazines, or other colored items from carpets and rugs. Hang draperies up with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet floors. Remove pillows or cushions from wet upholstered items.
  4. Avoid using electric or electronic items that have come into contact with water. This may include items such as light fixtures, ceiling fans, televisions, or appliances. If there is a possibility that someone else on the property may turn on an electric item that has come in contact with water, consider turning off the power to individual circuits within the power distribution panel of the property.

Categories of Water Damage in Your Napa Home

5/5/2021 (Permalink)

Floodwater can cause substantial damage to your home or building and can be harmful to your health.  The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) classifies water into three types: clear, gray, and black. Knowing what the color of your floodwater means is important so you can clean and dispose of water safely. Typically, water damage restoration professionals from SERVPRO of Napa will complete an assessment to determine the extent of water removal efforts and the required equipment. Cleanup, drying, and restoration services follow. Part of this assessment involves determining what category of water has caused the damage to ensure proper safety procedures for extraction.

Category 1 (Clean Water)

Clean water is water that comes from your home’s inbound water pipes, also known as potable water. Clean water is water that you could have consumed safely before it flooded through your home or business. You’ll typically see flooding from clean water coming from a broken water line, toilet tank, a leaking washing machine, or the refrigerator. Clean water that is cleaned up quickly typically doesn’t create health risks, but after just 24-48 hours of contact with your home, it can become gray water.

Category 2 (Gray Water)Category 3 (Black Water)

Black water is water that has been contaminated by floodwaters or sewage. It can wash into your home due to a flooded river, or appear from a backed-up toilet, or clogged sewage line near your Napa home. This water typically contains harmful contaminants such as bacteria, mold, and viruses, which can be very dangerous to your health. If black water damage isn’t rapidly addressed by professionals, your home can become contaminated and an unsafe environment.

IICRC Certified Technicians

12/1/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage can be deceptive. Water penetrates into structural cavities creating trapped pockets of saturation. The detection of water in these areas can often only be discovered with sophisticated moisture detection meters. Undetected moisture will continue to cause damage. This damage, at a minimum, will cause odors. Greater damage will surface when materials delaminate, shrink, split and further deteriorate to where costly repairs are required.

More than just removing excess water, IICRC-certified restorers have the knowledge and equipment to further dry a home or facility (including substructure materials) completely back to pre loss conditions. Through timely response and the careful monitoring of water damage, mold and other health issues can be prevented. If water damage has been present too long, mold will occur.

All IICRC-certified professionals have the training and experience to identify moisture sources, evaluate mold growth (visible or suspected), contain damage, remove contamination and dry materials to ensure that mold will not return.

Tips to Prevent Water Damage

11/23/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Napa County is always here to help when you have water damage in your home or business, but we also strongly believe in prevention. Water can damage important things and make you lose valued items, and nobody wants that. That's why we are bringing you some tips to help you be safe from water damage:

  • Ensure Good Drainage

Poor drainage weakens your foundation, causing cracks, uneven settling, and pathways for water to enter your home.

  • Test Your Sump Pump Regularly

Sump pumps come to life during storms. That’s not when you want to realize yours isn’t working properly. You should check it at least once a year, and ideally perform several checks during heavy storm seasons.

  • Check for Water Leaks and Fix Them

Persistent leaks lead to mold and mildew, rot, and even termites and carpenter ants (they like chewing soggy wood, since it’s soft). Yet if you fix a leak soon after it starts, there may be no long-term damage at all.

Remember to call SERVPRO of Napa County at (707)226-2181 if you need assistance with water damage.

Maintain and Understand your Indoor Plumbing Systems

11/20/2020 (Permalink)

  • Inspect appliance hoses and faucets. Make it a practice every year to check hoses leading to water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerator ice makers. You may also want to invest in a water leak monitoring and shut-off system that can alert you to any leakage issues. Immediately replace any hoses that have cracks or leaks, and replace them all every five to seven years.
  • Inspect showers and tubs. Check the seal and caulking around showers and tubs to make sure they are watertight and reseal if necessary.
  • When away on vacation, shut off the water supply to the washing machine and never leave the house while the washer or dishwasher is running.
  • Know the location of the main water shut-off valve in your home. A damaged hose or a burst pipe can send water racing into your home. Being able to locate and shut off the main water supply quickly will save stress, money and time.
  • Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system. This will protect against the increased pressure caused by freezing pipes and can help prevent your pipes from bursting.
  • Check plumbing and heating pipes. Look closely for cracks and leaks and have any necessary repairs made immediately.

Cleaning Gutters saves Time and Money

11/26/2019 (Permalink)

Cleaning gutters is part of home maintenance and before the rainy season it would be in your best interest to check and clean your gutters from any debris that might lead to a clog.

What you'll need:

  • Ladder
  • Buckets or a tarp
  • Trowel or gutter scoop
  • Garden hose
  • Spray nozzle
  • Wire hooks
  • Work gloves or latex gloves
  • Gutter hardware

First thing you’d want to do is place the ladder squarely and safely on the floor. Then place a tarp or buckets underneath for collecting debris. Put on your latex gloves and then your work gloves to keep your hands dry. Afterwards, grab the debris you can clogging the gutters and throw them to the tarp below or place them in a bucket. The next step would be to use the garden hose with the spray nozzle attached to flush any remaining debris in the gutters. If you don’t see the same amount of water is releasing from the drain, it might mean that you have a clog. In this case you’d want to place the hose at full power from the bottom of your gutter to shoot water in the opposite direction.  The last thing would be to check the gutter and see if it is sloped correctly to remove the possibility of standing water.

Taking these steps will assure that you have a nice clean flow of water when the rain falls. Here at SERVPRO of Napa County we want to inform you of preventative measures to keep your home from water damage.

If you need restoration services from a leader in the industry with nationwide support. Then call us at (707) 226-2181. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Winter is Coming

Top of photo says, "Here to Help" and there is a SERVPRO professional copied 3x holding a flashlight under a crawl space. Here to Help

The rainy season begins.

Taking preventative measures to avoid water entering your home and causing damage is vital to avoid any headache inducing accidents. I just learned that even in California pipes can freeze and rupture leaving your home vulnerable to massive damage. These are a couple of prevention methods to avoid major catastrophe from our rainy season.

Check your pipes.

Make sure that they are well insulated by using electrical tape around foam or any other insulation material around your pipes. For the harder to reach pipes, it is advised to use hot water to run through the pipes to warm them up.

Caulk and seal your windows.

Inspect your home and count the windows that need to be caulked. Having a caulking gun that you can buy at your local hardware store is needed. However, determining what type of caulk you use will determine on your specific home needs. I would recommend asking a professional. Things to consider as well, your timing of the project and the weather conditions. Caulk may take 24 hours to dry and a rainstorm could ruin your progress. Then make sure you clean and remove any old caulk before applying the new caulk. Smooth it out with a popsicle stick or plastic spoon. Then wait for 24 hours and your home becomes better insulated.

Inspect your roof.

This is very important and dangerous if not handled carefully. I would advise hiring a professional to inspect and make any necessary changes to keep water from leaking through your roof. Also note the condition your gutter is in. Remove any clutter to allow the proper drainage of water.

There are many more preventative measures but taking these steps will secure your home a little more than just riding the season out.

Why You Should Hire a Water Damage Service

5/6/2019 (Permalink)

After sustaining any form of water damage to your home - if it's on a significantly large scale - you'll seriously want to consider hiring a water damage service. It can be tempting to try and repair everything yourself, but not only could this be dangerous, but you could also risk doing a poor job that doesn't sufficiently fix the problem.

A side from that, the cost of hiring such a service could also be covered by your insurance company, depending on your individual situation, so in that case there's really no reason not to use a professional. In this article we'll take a look at some of the ways a professional can help you, and why it can be a lot more effective than trying to do everything yourself:

They Have More Effective Equipment: When it comes to removing any water in your home and drying out any dampness, the equipment that a professional service uses will be a lot more effective at doing the job. Not only will they be able to fully remove any visible water and wet patches in your home, they'll also have special equipment that can detect moisture in walls that you just wouldn't know about by yourself. This can prove critical to the long term structure of your home, and even your health as you don't want mold building up that you aren't aware of.

They Can Fully Ensure The Problem Is Solved: A water damage professional will have the necessary skills and experience to ensure that the problem is fully solved for good. If you are to dry the dampness out yourself, everything may appear to be fine but there may be underlying problems that you aren't aware of. A professional service will be able to detect any underlying problems and ensure that the damage is repaired for good.

The Cost May Be Recouped From Insurance: Standard home insurance doesn't cover all events of water damage, but it will cover some forms. It depends on your individual situation. Generally, if the problem occurred entirely from something that was out of your control, then insurance will be able to help you out. There are exceptions though, such as flooding, which usually requires it's own separate insurance cover. For this you'll obvious need to consult with your own insurance provider, but it's definitely something you should look into. The cost of a good water damage service will be well worth it, so if an insurance payout is made, then all the more reason to go with one.

In conclusion, the benefits of using a good water damage service far outweigh the downsides. The aftermath of water damage is definitely not something to be taken lightly, as the after effects can result in substantial damage to your home or health. Find out what your local water damage service has to say about your situation and take it from there.

How Can Professional Services Help With Water Damage Repair

4/12/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage, no matter how minor and unnoticeable, can be equally damaging to your house as something as severe as floods. Any damage caused to your belongings due to water absorption needs immediate attention and in most cases mold removal needs professional help. Even if the water penetration is the result of an unnoticeable water spot, it can cause substantial damage to your property. Some of the significant signs for mold remediation include mold growth, peeling paint, bad odor and moisture on carpets and other furniture.

Water damage does not necessarily have to be visible and overwhelming. Hence, it is important for you to know how to detect water absorption and where to look for it. Some of the common places you are likely to find initial signs of water damage are:

Firstly, the roof of your house, which is subject to wear and tear due to various reasons like weather extremities, continuous hitting from tree branches, old or poor-quality roof tiling etc. Water dripping down any part of the roof is a sign of mold remediation.

Secondly, water can penetrate through doors and windows, in case they are not installed properly, and cause considerable mold repair. Moreover, water intrusion can also damage the insulation system within your house. Notice your doors and windows carefully during rainfall and other weather changes for possible signs of mold damage.

Thirdly, blocked or overflowing gutters and drains can be a substantial cause of water damage in your house. During heavy rainfall, if the gutters are clogged, it fails to send down the water flowing from the roofs, resulting in a large amount of water accumulating near the base of your house. Such accumulations are harmful for the foundation of the house, causing moisture to penetrate into your house.

Fourthly, appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, dryers, refrigerators, etc. should be regularly checked and regulated for proper maintenance and prevention of possible leakages, which might be a cause of water damage.

Lastly, water damage can also be caused by factors as serious as sewage overflow and flood.

Whatever may be the cause of these damages, and however minor or severe their projections may be, they need to be taken care of as soon as they attack. The best way to deal with this problem is to contact experienced mold remediation repair services on an immediate basis. Expert services have the necessary experience and knowledge to solve your mold damage problems through required equipment and expertise. The tools they use for helping with water damage are:

  • Measuring equipment like hygrometers and moisture detectors to identify the exact level of mold remediation caused.
  • Sensors like infrared camera to detect water penetration even in remote corners, where mold retention can cause substantial damage.
  • Highly powerful gas-pumps to pump out high levels of water.
  • High-quality Dehumidifiers for adequate drying of the area or objects.
  • Superior products for deodorizing and disinfecting the affected location or objects.

These professional services are reliable and available at your service 24 hours and 7 days a week. They are quick to reach you within about an hour, which is extremely important during periods of emergency.

4/12/2019 (Permalink)

Water damage repairs are necessary to ensure that the structure of the house is safeguarded and protected from deterioration. As we all know, Water damage is a big concern for many homeowners. It is a form of loss that results from the intrusion of water across specific areas or an entire level of the property. The damage can be minor and progressive and it could also be catastrophic with instant results. The damage is a big contributor to the loss of property value. Flooding, rainfall and stagnant water can result to a number of risks like the weakening of the soil foundation, damage to home interiors, electrical devices, rotting and others. Any homeowner should aim to minimize the risks and prevent future damage. This is critical to keep the home safe and maintain its market value.

Risks levels caused by water damage

Water damage repairs can address a number of risks. There are several kinds of damage caused by water. The first level is due to clear water. It could be broken pipes or water spots. The second level is caused by gray water that could be filled with contaminants. It could be sewage water, or failure of water dependent devices to discharge the water out. Lastly, there is damage caused by black water that could be caused by catastrophic events and could be difficult to fix.

Is it safe to go DIY?

When considering water damage repairs, there are some conditions that can be addressed simply by DIY methods. If the damage has not seeped through various systems across the home and can be mitigated by simple repairs, then it might be relevant to do it yourself. However, most water damage shows symptoms when the condition it is already widespread. Plywood and other wooden structures that have been moistened by leaking pipes, ice dams or broken roofs can lead to build up of mold and mildew, causing illness. Such problems can lead to multiple structural and health concerns. Therefore, fast and immediate action is necessary for any homeowner.

Getting a restoration contractor

A restoration service is most beneficial for homes with massive and instantaneous damage like plumbing issues, sewage problems, flooding, hurricane damage and other events that could last more than 24 hours. These particular damages can make the home uninhabitable. It could also lead to health risks due to the growth of microorganisms. Such damages need to be addressed by experts since it is not just on the surface where the problem can settle. The foundation of the house can experience damage as well. Hence, for most damage cause by water, it would be best to have the help of an expert in dealing with them.

Water-related damage has always been a big concern for many homeowners and to address both mild and severe issues, getting the help from restoration services can be critical to:

  • find out the extent of the risk using state of the art equipment
  • make the room/home habitable again
  • protect your family from microorganisms that are present in stagnant, dirty water
  • safeguard the goods such as furniture or electronics from risks
  • Keep interiors and exteriors in top shape after the damage.

Damages incurred from water can be devastating. It is important to do something about it fast and effectively. With minor or large scale damage, it would be best to get advice from expert doing water damage repairs to ensure a home that is dry and safe from future risks that could happen. Investing on quality restoration service is then necessary for any homeowner as it will make sure that their homes are secure at all times.

Spotting Water Damage

12/19/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Napa County knows it and because we care about you we brought information on how to see signs of water damage in your basement of foundation. Evidence of water damage isn’t always obvious and sometimes it’s not even visible so make sure you pay attention to these signs:

  • CHANGES IN COLOR/TEXTURE OF SURFACES -  Both walls and floors can show signs of water damage.
  • CRACKING – This will usually occur in the foundation and/or floor and can happen both inside and outside the home.
  • ODOR – While basements and crawl spaces usually have a certain smell, it doesn’t necessarily mean there is a water problem. Pay attention to a strong damp, musty odor that doesn’t go away (even after a storm or wet weather). In most cases, it is mold or mildew that you smell, which means you’ve got moisture or water damage on your hands.
  • MOLD – If you can’t spot mold, you can sometimes smell it, so that’s why it’s important to pay attention to distinctive odors in the basement. Mold will appear on furniture, wood and other organic materials, walls and other surfaces either as dark green or black in color or sometimes a white powdery substance.

Why IICRC Certified Technicians

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage can be deceptive. Water penetrates into structural cavities creating trapped pockets of saturation. The detection of water in these areas can often only be discovered with sophisticated moisture detection meters. Undetected moisture will continue to cause damage. This damage, at a minimum, will cause odors. Greater damage will surface when materials delaminate, shrink, split and further deteriorate to where costly repairs are required.

More than just removing excess water, IICRC-certified restorers have the knowledge and equipment to further dry a home or facility (including substructure materials) completely back to preloss conditions.
